Introduction

Other features contained in the EVC-1 are: side-chain (key) listen switch, separate attack and release time controls, a side-chain insert jack, a stereo link connector, balanced input and output connectors (both 1/4" TRS and XLR) with ground lift switch, and high input impedance for interfacing to semi-professional equipment.

Front Panel

1. THRESHOLD knob - sets the level at which the compression will start to take effect. The counter clockwise position of this knobs starts signal compression at the lowest level.
2. ATTACK knob - sets how quickly gain reduction will occur after it is called for. The counter clockwise position of this knobs is the fastest attack response.
3. RELEASE knob - sets how quickly gain reduction will cease after the input signal falls below the threshold. The counter clockwise position of this knobs is the fastest release response.
4. RATIO knob - is the amount of compression which occurs when the signal is above the threshold level. For a setting of 4:1, every 4 dB signal increase over the threshold level will result in only a 1 dB increase in signal output.
5. OUTPUT knob - sets the output level.
6. BYPASS switch - "in" position bypasses signal. Compressor active is the "out" position.
7. SIDE CHAIN LISTEN switch - "in" position monitors the side chain signal. "out" position is normal.
8. METER switch - "in" position displays the output level on the meter. "out" position is displays the gain reduction level on the meter.

Rear Panel

The EVC-1 rear-panel contains mostly connectors. You'll find the following on the rear-panel:

1. POWER CONNECTOR - 7-pin DIN male connector for connection to high voltage power supply.
2. AUDIO INPUT XLR - Balanced +4 dBM line level audio input. May be unbalanced by grounding pin-3.
3. AUDIO OUTPUT XLR - Balanced +4 dBM line level audio output. May be unbalanced by grounding pin-3.
4. GROUND LIFT SWITCH - disconnects pin-1 from chassis ground on both outputs. Helpful for eliminating ground loop hum.
5. AUDIO INPUT ¼" TRS connector - Balanced +4 dBM line level TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) 1/4" jack for audio input. May be unbalanced by grounding the ring connection.
6. AUDIO OUTPUT ¼" TRS connector - Balanced +4 dBM line level TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) 1/4" jack for audio output. May be unbalanced by grounding the ring connection.
7. STEREO LINK ¼" TRS connector - Use a phase flipped (tip and ring reversed) TRS patch cable to link two EVC-1s together for stereo operation. See chapter on stereo operation for more information.
8. SIDE CHAIN INSERT ¼" TRS connector - Allows effects like EQ to be inserted into the side chain. Useful for de-essing. Tip is input. Ring is output.

Stereo linking of two EVC-1s is useful for compression of stereo mixes or other stereo program material. The first step is to connect both EVC-1s with a TRS phase flip cable connected to the STEREO LINK connectors of both units. This cable is wired according to the following diagram:

It doesn't matter which end is connected to each unit. Neither unit is the master in this mode, however this mode ensures that the variable gain stages in each unit will track properly. It is recommended that each EVC-1s' controls be set to approximately the same position for stereo operation.

It's sometimes desirable to "EQ" the audio which controls the gain reduction of the EVC-1. This is the case for de'essing. Sibalent energy is contained in the 5-7 KHz range and can be reduced by making the side chain more sensitive to this frequency range. This can be done by connecting an equalizer to the EVC-1's side chain insert using a standard TRS insert cable. The EVC-1's side chain audio output is connected to the ring of the SIDE CHAIN INSERT connector and the side chain audio input is connect to the tip.

HOW LONG IS THE WARRANTY AND WHO IS PROTECTED

Labor (except removal and installation charges) and parts are warranted for one year. This warranty may be enforced only by the first consumer purchaser.

WHAT IS COVERED AND WHAT IS NOT COVERED

Except as specified below, this warranty covers all defects in material or workmanship in this product. The following are not covered by the warranty:

1.  Any product which is not registered via a product registration card.
2.  Any product on which the serial number has been defaced, modified or removed.
3.  Damage, deterioration, or malfunction resulting from:
a. Accident, misuse, abuse, neglect, fire, water (or other liquids), static electricity, lightning, or other acts of nature, or failure to follow instructions supplied with the product.
b. Repair or attempted repair by anyone not authorized by Voce Inc.
c. Any shipment of the product (claims must be presented to the carrier).
d. Any cause which does not relate to a product defect.

ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANT ABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE LENGTH OF THIS WARRANTY.

EXCLUSION OF DAMAGES

VOCE'S LIABILITY FOR ANY DEFECTIVE PRODUCT IS LIMITED TO THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE PRODUCT AT OUR OPTION. VOCE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR:

1. DAMAGE TO OTHER PROPERTY CAUSED BY ANY DEFECTS IN THIS PRODUCT, DAMAGES BASED UPON INCONVENIENCE, LOSS OF USE OF THE PRODUCT, LOSS OF TIME, COMMERCIAL LOSS, OR,
2. ANY OTHER DAMAGES, WHETHER INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR OTHERWISE. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS AND/OR DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

HOW YOU CAN GET WARRANTY SERVICE
To obtain warranty service on this product:

1. Take or ship the product to an authorized dealer or Voce Inc.
2. Do not ship the product to Voce Inc. without authorization obtained via a phone call or letter.
3. A dated sales receipt must be included as proof of warranty coverage.
